Madhumita Murgia is an award-winning journalist and author who writes about technology, science and society. Her first book, CODE DEPENDENT, is a narrative exploration of the impacts of artificial intelligence on the lives of ordinary people across nine countries. It has been translated into eight languages and was shortlisted for the inaugural Women’s Prize for Non-Fiction 2024.

Madhu is currently the FT's first Artificial Intelligence Editor, leading coverage of cutting-edge developments in AI globally, and broader themes including surveillance, data privacy and tech regulation. She has spent the past decade travelling the world from Silicon Valley to Seoul, writing about the people, start-ups and corporations shaping emerging technologies for publications including WIRED, the Washington Post and the Telegraph.

Her TEDx Talk, about her personal data being sold by data brokers has been viewed by nearly 200,000 people online. Before journalism, Madhumita worked on an HIV vaccine at Oxford University, from which she holds degrees in Biology and Clinical Immunology.
