For over a decade, The Ceili House Band have been a beloved fixture of Bristol’s Irish folk scene — equal parts musicians and mischief-makers, known as much for their energy and spirit as their musicianship. Originally performing simply as The Ceili, the band evolved over hundreds of gigs, with lineup changes gradually shaping a tighter, more focused sound rooted in Irish tradition but fuelled by punk attitude and live-wire charisma.
A major turning point came in 2014 when Patrick Darling joined the group after responding to a Facebook post announcing the departure of founding member Chris “CJ” James. A Bristol music student with a love of Irish folk and heavy metal, Patrick quickly became the heart of the band — singing, playing banjo, guitar and melodica across nearly 400 performances.
In 2021, with only one original member remaining, the group officially became The Ceili House Band. But behind the scenes, Patrick’s health had begun to decline. What first appeared to be clumsiness gradually developed into severe mobility issues, eventually leaving him unable to stand, then unable to play banjo, and finally unable to perform at all. In 2024, Patrick stepped away from the band after being diagnosed with MND.
Then, in early 2026, a new chapter began. Through a groundbreaking project involving speech therapist Richard Cave and UK tech company ElevenLabs, Patrick was given a state-of-the-art AI voice model, allowing him to perform again using technology designed to restore voices lost to conditions such as MND.
The band reunited for an emotional performance of Patrick’s song “Ghost of a Man I Never Met” at London’s O2 Magazine Theatre — a world-first live performance using the technology. The moment drew international attention, with coverage from the BBC, ITV, The Telegraph, The Times and media outlets across Europe, the US, India and Japan.
Now, following that extraordinary performance, The Ceili House Band arrive at SXSW London for another landmark moment — performing at Abbey Road Studios as part of one of the world’s leading festivals for music and innovation.
