Gordon Smart

Journalist, Editor, Broadcaster

Gordon made his name in journalism as the youngest editor of the famous Bizarre showbiz column in The Sun newspaper, landing the job when he was only 26-years-old. He was voted Showbiz Reporter of The Year in 2012, after picking up a highly commended nomination every year he worked on the showbiz beat. He was also nominated for Young Journalist of the Year in 2005.

At 32, he was appointed editor of The Scottish Sun, steering the biggest selling newspaper in Scotland through the independence referendum in 2014, a Commonwealth Games and huge news stories including The Clutha helicopter crash and Glasgow bin lorry tragedy, winning a clutch of awards in the process.

He returned to London in 2016 as Deputy Editor of the national edition during the European referendum. He can also claim to have co-edited a special edition of the paper with Luke Skywalker aka Mark Hamill, to mark May the 4th Be With You Day. Or is that Jedi-ting?

During his time at The Sun, Gordon was a regular face on national television. He was a pundit on Xtra Factor and also spearheaded special editions of Britain & Ireland’s Next Top Model and The Face, with Naomi Campbell, Erin O’Connor and Caroline Winberg. He was given a cameo in Gavin & Stacey by his friend James Corden, playing the role of “Handsome Barman” in a Cardiff nightclub.

Whilst working on Bizarre, Gordon presented Smart on Sunday on Xfm, which eventually turned his attention to full-time radio. He left News UK in 2016 after 14 years to join Radio X as the Evening Show host, continuing Smart on Sunday. He regularly deputised for Johnny Vaughan on Drive and presented The Kickabout, Radio X’s weekend sports show.

In 2013, Gordon co-founded Copper Dog Whisky, where he still works as an ambassador after selling the brand to Diageo in 2018. His work with Copper Dog has taken him around the world, most recently a 12 week coast-to-coast tour of on and off trade venues.
