What does it mean to be a man today?
The Manosphere offers a simple answer to a complex question. On social media, influencers like Andrew Tate are taking advantage of young men’s ambitions and anxieties to feed them misogyny dressed up as practical advice. The evidence shows that this content is profoundly damaging for young men’s mental health. The consequences for the women and girls in their lives – forced to confront the normalisation of misogyny - are catastrophic.
This session will outline how London is leading the way with a plan to combat the manosphere, and support the city’s young men to thrive. It will also highlight the role played by opaque algorithms in amplifying manosphere influencers on social media platforms, and set out what the rest of society can do.
In the ensuing discussion, panellists will get to the heart of what it means to be a man today. They’ll talk about why so many young men seem to be struggling right now, and they’ll ask whether – in our understandable concern with toxic masculinity – we have failed to imagine a better way for men to be.
